notepal is an electronic lab-notebook based on Drupal.
It is aimed at experimental sciences, but can be used for other purposes as well.
notepal is customized with many drupal modules that simplify maintaining records for day to day scientific activity.
This package is derived from the drupal installation used as an electronic lab-notebook at Bhalla Lab, NCBS, Bangalore.
The original installation went through a lot of customization over last three years to meet the requirements of the researchers in the lab. As it turned out, some other labs became interested in this kind of customized content management system. As a result, we decided to release it as a free software under the GNU General Public License.
The most important content of this installation is a blog, which is customized with forms to enter information related to experiments. One can attach data files, insert images into a blog. Moreover, the blogs are enabled with revision control, so that you can track changes and revert to older edits.
Recent blog entries are displayed on the right side of the pages. You can tag and search the contents of the blogs.
It also has the wiki module enabled, so you can create a Wiki in parallel with daily blogs.
Finally, there is the event module, which allows you to schedule events. This can be useful as a sort of web-calendar. By default, the upcoming events will be shown on the left of the pages.
Along with the archive of the file structure and the database tables, a pair of interactive scripts to back up the installation and restore from a backup-archive is provided. The installation involves applying the restore script on the provided archive. You can update the backup script to provide your local installation settings and use it non-interactively for periodic backup of your site.
